Did you know that you can develop fatty liver disease even if you follow a healthy diet and never drink alcohol? Certain medications, viral hepatitis, a familial predisposition to having high cholesterol, rapid weight loss, and sometimes even pregnancy can cause it. One of the major worries following a fatty liver diagnosis is a later diagnosis of liver cancer due to chronic inflammation. A meta-analysis performed at the Bassett Medical Center and the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons has shown that coffee drinkers have noticeably less liver damage and a lower number of inflammation blood markers than non-coffee drinkers. Coffee can decrease the risk of cirrhosis, or liver cell scarring, by up to 80 percent. Just be sure not to it up with heavy cream and sugar.
