New research by scientists at the University of Maryland School of Medicine has uncovered a new biochemical pathway by which the brain uses an unusual steroid to control blood pressure. The study, which also suggests new approaches for treating high blood pressure and heart failure, appeared in the journal Public Library of Science (PLOS) One.
The key player is a little-known steroid called ouabain (pronounced WAH-bane). In this video, Dr. Mordecai Blaustein explains the role of this steroid and the research to discover a way to block its harmful effects.
The University of Maryland School of Medicine serves as the anchor for a large academic health center which aims to provide the best medical education, conduct the most innovative biomedical research and provide the best patient care and community service to Maryland and beyond.
