Neurotransmitters in the brain are responsible for awake and sleep cycles. In addition to the usuals, serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine, there is a chemical called orexin that circulates in the brain and causes wakefulness. A new drug called Belsomra is a orexin receptor antagonist, it blocks the action of the chemical, causing a decrease in wakefulness. This allows the normal chemical changes that promote sleep to be more dominant, and put you to sleep.

I have not used this drug yet in practice, but am excited to try this novel treatment. If you have been on this, let me know how it worked for you.
